"Small surprise that the best Key Lime Pie in Vallarta is on the best cruise. Tart and just the right consistency and color. This was the genuine article."

After a few years here, all the cruises on this bay seem the same. Heavy on the booze, light on the food, pack ‘em in, motor all around. Finally someone has put something distinctive together that I’m sure will be popular. Luxury class sailing cruises from Cruceros Delfines are the invention of Mark and Carlos (partners in business and life). It’s a team with something to offer. The yacht involved is Rainbow Dancer, from San Francisco. Mark sailed her down a few years ago, and he waited out the licensing process by managing other charter trips. Carlos has experience on the other gay trips here in Vallarta, and they combine their skills and experience to the client’s advantage. Rainbow Dancer is a beautiful yacht, lovingly maintained, and a classic. Conventional wisdom is that it’s too nice to charter. Our advantage is that Mark and Carlos don’t listen to conventional wisdom. Most cruises offer some fruit when you board, but Rainbow Dancer also includes yogurts, granola, fresh juices and freshly ground coffee. The bar has the best Bloody Marys in Vallarta. You can safely forget breakfasting before this cruise. As soon as the sails are up, out come the salsa and chips, homemade guacamole and quesadillas with Carlos' special strawberry salsa. Before they had even served lunch, I’d had more and better food than most of the other boat trips. And this was just the beginning! After about two hours sailing they anchored near a beach. Some of the twinks on deck went off to swim and snorkle while I gobbled down the taquitos, smoked salmon and oysters, and another Carlos specialty – Mushrooms in Chilé Butter. Totally yummy! Those poor boys that went swimming will never know what they missed! While everyone else was swimming and I was gobbling the appetizers, they had the gas barbeque going making the Teriyaki Chicken that is marinated in their own homemade teriyaki sauce. Wonderful taste of fresh ginger on this one. The lunch buffet also included Chicken Molé, a Mexican holiday dish with shredded chicken breast in a unsweetened chocolate-based sauce, goosed up with a large number of various chilés. To round out the buffet table, were cold roast pork slices with a creamy poblano sauce. This one was quite mild, not too spicy, with just a few too many calories in that delicious cream. Well the deck looked like a pasture, what with all the contented cows aboard after lunch. Mark sailed us back, with the motor off, to some of our favorite sounds on the stereo system. Meanwhile, Carlos was below preparing the final assault on our diets: Key Lime Pie. If you’ve been to that other gay vacation mecca, Key West, you know about the pie. Key Lime Pie is rare here in Vallarta, and when I’ve ever found it, it isn’t like Key West at all. Small surprise that the best Key Lime Pie in Vallarta is on the best cruise. Tart and just the right consistency and color. This was the genuine article. I only wish these guys would open a restaurant instead of run a gay cruise. If you’re considering a tour of the bay and you’re gay, you can’t do better than this one. -gluttonous girl |
